Identity Theft Statistics

All identity theft statistics and consumer fraud statistics are from the Federal Trade Commission report of January 25, 2006.  All identity theft statistics are for calendar year 2005.

There is no doubt about it.  Identity theft is on the rise.  Computer hackers and 'phishers', telephone scammers and outright negligence by corporate America is exposing millions of Americans to identity theft.  A Washington Post article from June 7, 2005 reports that in the prior 6 months, over 6 million consumers have had their personal information lost or stolen.

CitiFinancial alone lost data for 3.9 million consumers.  This data included names, addresses, social security numbers and loan information.  Thanks alot CitiFinancial!

On the brighter side, the same article states that Bank of America lost data on 1.2 million federal employees including some U.S. senators.  Maybe financial institutions will be held accoutable after all!
